Reviews - Songs about love and life on the hippie side of country

This is the band’s sixth CD & recorded in Austin, TX & Eindhoven, Netherlands. The band is influenced heavily by a mix of 70s musical heroes. Track 2 sounds like a follow-up to Rick Nelson’s hit “Garden Party,” which it was also named after. It’s a warm folky melody with mandolin & fiddle strains that while pulled from a vintage source but never sounds too retro – because that’s the talent that this expressive band provides. The CD art is a handsome colorful 6-panel fold with a 12pp stitched insert with lyrics & gorgeous photography. The 45-minute 12-cut Songs About Love & Life On the Hippie Side of Country was produced by drummer Eric van de Lest (Netherlands) & guitarist/vocalist Walt Wilkins (Austin). The vocals are shared between Bart de Win (piano/Wurlitzer/B3 organ/accordion) & the honey-toned vocals of Arianne Knegt. The rollicking barrelhouse piano & invigorating vocals on “Plough (Plow),” is a marvelous introduction to the energy & roots-country-Americana this trio has successfully absorbed. While the band has that long CD title they don’t linger long in hippie-dippy song structures or novelty music. They take their music seriously. “Love & Understanding,” has an Americana thread but it’s planted in a funkier groove & cooks on a slow blue pilot flame. The songwriting is strong & actually better than many American counterparts who wallow in cliches. The overall presentation is always bold & flavorful like the finest food. Perhaps material-wise the only thing missing is a song or two that get down & dirty. A bit more challenging instead of always being polite & sufficiently stylish. The musicianship is always stellar. The band may be foreign, but their infectious Americana has caught the deep ears of audiences in Texas & that’s a hard group to impress.” - John Apice (December 1 2022)

There’s a distinct 70s vibe running through the music of Dutch combo Tip Jar whose latest album, ‘Songs about love and life on the hippie side of country’ pretty much does what you’d expect. Recorded in Eindhoven and Austin, Texas, it’s a classy set of country-influenced soft rock showcasing the writing of Bart de Win and the perfectly judged vocals of Arianne Knegt.” - (May-June 2023 edition)

"Songs About Love And Life On The Hippie Side Of Country" ist Hingabe, Emotion, Nachdenklichkeit und reflektiert auch Freude. "Songs About Love And Life On The Hippie Side Of Country" ist wieder einmal ein faszinierendes Album. "Songs About Love And Life On The Hippie Side Of Country" ist ein weiteres Tip Jar-Highlight.” - Joe Brookes (February 24 2023)

- Remo Ricaldone (February 17 2023)

This album appeared last year as a follow up to the previous 2021 release, One Lifetime, which was a fine example of the high quality output of this Dutch duo. Bart de Win and his wife Arianne Knegt formed Tip Jar back in 2013 and the music they create spans different musical genres. At the centre of the writing is the close harmony of Bart and Arianne and their focus on a solid sense of musicality, build over years of hard earned experience and inspiration. The bright up-tempo sounds of early tracks, Never Saw It Coming and White Sands are balanced by the poignant folk sound of Creaking Of the Stairs and a look back at memories formed in younger years. The jazz tinged arrangement of Plough has a honky tonk element that is infectious and  highlights a great dual vocal from Bart and Arianne, plus some fine boogie woogie piano from Bart. The blues swing of Wondering Why is balanced against the simple melodic ruminations of Colours. Equally, on Strong Enough, Arianne delivers a subtly wistful performance in looking back at past relationships. The creative flow of the arrangements certainly draws upon a wide palette of different hues and tints. Big Family sums everything up with the message that we are all in this together and we need to rely upon each other in the sense of being inspired by music and the creative arts. Another worthy release and worth your time investing in the creative vision of Tip Jar.” - Paul McGee (January 24 2022)

- Wolfgang Giese (February 13 2023)
