“Abermals gelingt es Tip Jar mit den Mitmusikern, die unterschiedlichen Stile unter einem ganz persönlichen Tip Jar-Hut zu versammeln. So etwas können definitiv nicht viele Gruppen von sich behaupten. Mit bemerkenswerter Musik bringt Tip Jar unsere Trommelfelle zum Schwingen. Dabei wurde den Leuten vor den Lautsprechern sehr schnell deutlich, dass wir es mit einer Musik aus dem obersten Regal der (ganz allgemein) Singer/Songwriter-Rubrik zu tun haben. Vergleicht man das hingebungsvolle und die Gänsehaut fördernde "Colors" mit anderen Liedern, dann darf man an dieser Stelle durchaus davon ausgehen, dass Tip Jars Musik nicht nur swingt und groovt, sondern auch rockige Aspekte einbezieht. Sehr sparsam instrumentiert ist "Colors", aus meiner Sicht der Primus inter Pares, denn das Album mit seinen zwölf Tracks enthält keinen einzigen Durchhänger. Wunderschön, diese Arianne Knegts Stimme, hier im Duett mit Bart de Win gesungen, ist so etwas wie Andacht angesagt. Ähnlich sparsam arrangiert ist "Strong Enough". Man versinkt förmlich in ein weiches Kopfkissen und kann sich mit geschlossenen Augen dem Träumen hingeben. Die wechselnden Lead Vocals sind toll und wird der Gesang dann noch in klasse Chöre eingebettet, ist Faszination angesagt. "Songs About Love And Life On The Hippie Side Of Country" ist Hingabe, Emotion, Nachdenklichkeit und reflektiert auch Freude. Im mit einigen Fotos bebilderten Booklet sind alle Texte nachzulesen und die sind wie zwölf Stück aus dem Kuchen des alltäglichen Lebens geschnitten. Im positiven Sinn holt einen das folgende "Easy" aus einer bunt-blumenreichen Traumwelt heraus. Diese Nummer ist einer der Vertreter, die Tip Jar im rockenden Modus präsentiert. Super passt hier das Harry Hendriks-Solo auf der elektrischen Gitarre, genauso wie bei "Family". Melodie ist, wie bei anderen Liedern auch, Trumpf. Beeindruckend ist die Vielzahl an Instrumenten, die die Leute im Line-up zum Klingen bringen. Da hat man ein sehr feines Händchen für die Arrangements der Nummern gezeigt. "Songs About Love And Life On The Hippie Side Of Country" ist wieder einmal ein faszinierendes Album. “Anche se gran parte della loro attività si tiene negli States, i Tip Jar sono una sorta di collettivo musicale nato in Olanda che ruota attorno alle figure di Bart de Win, tastierista (ma qui anche alla fisarmonica) di grande esperienza molto considerato per aver collaborato con personaggi come Iain Matthews, Kevin Welch, Sam Baker e Walt Wilkins e aver calcato alcuni dei migliori palchi del Lone Star State come Gruene Hall e Luckenbach e la splendida voce di Arianne Knegt, protagonista dei migliori brani del loro nuovo, sesto album. Inciso tra i Paesi Bassi e Austin, Texas, prodotto con estrema efficacia da Walt Wilkins e, per quanto riguarda la parte olandese da Eric van de Lest con gli stessi Tip Jar, “Songs About Love And Life On The Hippie Side Of Country” rende giustizia al chilometrico titolo ponendosi come ispirazione sulla falsariga dei suoni texani e della produzione country indipendente che rappresenta ancora la parte più propositiva e genuina del genere. Tutto il materiale qui proposto è originale, firmato da Bart de Win a volte con la collaborazione di autori terzi, decisamente interessante e vestito di abiti essenziali che colpiscono nel segno dando vita ad una selezione sufficientemente varia e brillante con l’ottima sezione ritmica composta da Pat Manske alla batteria e Bill Small al basso e i contrappunti chitarristici dello stesso producer Walt Wilkins e di Harry Hendricks. In maniera naturale si passa da classiche melodie country a sfumature swingate e western, da profumi sudisti all’approccio disincantato tipicamente texano in un alternarsi di canzoni che mantengono sempre il loro essere sincere e autentiche. Ci sono i colori quasi ‘neworleansiani’ di “Wondering Why”, quelli naturalmente country di “Garden Party” con il bel violino di Joost van Es, quelli quasi bluegrass di “Plough (Plow)” e quelli pastello ed acustici di “Colors”, con numerose ed eccellenti performance vocali di Arianne Knegt come in “Strong Enough”, in “Out Of The Blue” con qualche eco gospel, in “Never Saw It Coming” dai begli arpeggi chitarristici e in “Creaking Of The Stairs” suggestiva e pianistica. Un album insomma che può soddisfare i gusti di chi ama la scena country indipendente ma anche di chi segue con passione certa canzone d’autore legata alle radici.” - Remo Ricaldone (February 17 2023)

“Beim Vorgänger war mir bereits aufgefallen, dass die Musik sehr weit gefächert war, aus Elementen des Folk, aus Country, Nuancen von Bluegrass und auch Jazz, dazu ein Tick Pop. Nun wird die sechste Platte der Band vorgelegt, eingespielt in Austin, Texas und in Eindhoven, in den Niederlanden, und wiederum erwartet uns eine bunte Americana-Mischung, mit Roots Music, Country, Country Rock, Pop, Rock und dezent souligen Anflügen. Im separaten Booklet sind alle Texte beigefügt, und so erfahren wir so Manches, was uns Alle im täglichen Leben begegnen könnte, Texte über Erfahrungen, Gefühle und Erlebnisse. Locker und beschwingt starten die ersten Songs, und "Never Saw It Coming" ist ein feines Beispiel für einen melodischen Song im Folk/Singer-Songwriter-Gewand. Noch melodischer strahlt das romantische "White Sand", und bei "Creaking Of The Stairs" wird Arianne Knegt von Bart de Win nur von Piano und Akkorde begleitet, und in diesem reduzierten Arrangement vermögen die Beiden eine schöne Stimmung zu erzeugen. Country-Rock-Feeling stellt sich dann mit "Plough (Plow)" beschwingt und flott ein, hier kommt dann auch erstmalig das Banjo zum Einsatz, "Love And Understanding" groovet dezent und mit leichtem Vaudeville-Feeling erscheint dann "Wondering Why". Und so wechseln sich ganz zarte Stimmungen (#9, 10), ein straighter Soft-Rocker (#11) und das abschließende "Big Family", das wiederum eine rockende, aber cool schleppende Atmosphäre ausstrahlt, ab, womit bewiesen wäre, dass auch Songs About Love And Life On The Hippie Side Of Country eine Menge Abwechslung bietet.” - Wolfgang Giese (February 13 2023)

“This album appeared last year as a follow up to the previous 2021 release, One Lifetime, which was a fine example of the high quality output of this Dutch duo. Bart de Win and his wife Arianne Knegt formed Tip Jar back in 2013 and the music they create spans different musical genres. At the centre of the writing is the close harmony of Bart and Arianne and their focus on a solid sense of musicality, build over years of hard earned experience and inspiration. The bright up-tempo sounds of early tracks, Never Saw It Coming and White Sands are balanced by the poignant folk sound of Creaking Of the Stairs and a look back at memories formed in younger years. The jazz tinged arrangement of Plough has a honky tonk element that is infectious and  highlights a great dual vocal from Bart and Arianne, plus some fine boogie woogie piano from Bart. The blues swing of Wondering Why is balanced against the simple melodic ruminations of Colours. Equally, on Strong Enough, Arianne delivers a subtly wistful performance in looking back at past relationships. The creative flow of the arrangements certainly draws upon a wide palette of different hues and tints. Big Family sums everything up with the message that we are all in this together and we need to rely upon each other in the sense of being inspired by music and the creative arts. “Abbiamo scritto sui Tip Jar nel 2021 in occasione del loro quinto album One Lifetime, registrato e pubblicato durante la pandemia. Si tratta di una band nata per iniziativa di una coppia olandese formata da Bart de Win e Arianne Knegt, che opera in ambito roots rock melodico con influenze pop e jazz. Dopo avere scoperto quanto naturalmente si fondevano le loro voci, hanno registrato un paio di duetti per un album di Bart e hanno deciso di proseguire su questa strada. De Win ha studiato piano-jazz e voce al conservatorio di Rotterdam dove attualmente insegna, ma ha sempre amato l’Americana inserendo elementi jazz e blues. Ha collaborato con artisti come l’olandese Gerard Van Maasakkers e la cantante greca Maria Markesini. Arianne è stata cantante solista di Marylou & The Good Old Boys, band di country e rockabilly e poi di The Simple Life tra il 2009 e il 2013. Prodotto e registrato in parte ad Eindhoven da Eric Van De Lest che suona la batteria in alcune tracce e in parte ad Austin con la produzione di Ron Flynt e con la partecipazione alla voce e chitarra dell’amico cantautore Walt Wilkins, Songs About Love And Life è aperto dalla mossa Out Of The Blue in cui Bart suona le tastiere (piano e organo B3) e affianca come seconda voce Arianne, seguita dalla melodica e corale Garden Party in cui si nota l’affascinante presenza del violino di Joost Van Es. Never Saw It Coming ha un’atmosfera morbida e avvolgente, mentre Creaking of the Stairs è un intimo duetto tra le due voci con l’accompagnamento di piano e fisarmonica da parte di Bart. In un disco che rispecchia il titolo, confezionato con una dozzina di canzoni semplici e orecchiabili sulla vita e sull’amore, meritano una segnalazione anche la brillante Plough, la jazzata Love And Understanding, la malinconica Wondering Why, la ballata country Strong Enough e il mid-tempo rock Big Family posto in chiusura.” - Paolo Baiotti (January 25 2022)

“Songs About Love And Life On The Hippie Side Of Country is alvast een mooie titel voor de nieuwste worp liedjes. Aan de opnamen die tot stand kwamen in Eindhoven werken wederom enkele Texanen mee. Ron Flynt legde de bijdragen van Walt Wilkins, Bill Small en Pat Manske die aan de andere kant van de oceaan tot stand kwamen vast. Harry Hendriks (diverse snaarinstrumenten en zang) en drummer Eric van de Lest werkten mee in Brabant, net als Joost van Es (viool) en Tonnie Ector (bas) voor enkele bijdragen. Het toetsenspel van De Win (piano, Wurlitzer, accordeon) is de constante in de composities van Tip Jar. De hippies verwelkomen de zomer op Garden Party. Ze hollen door de waterstralen van de sprinklers en dansen in de straten. Maar er moet ook werk worden verzet in die tuin.
