“Respected piano sideman, Bart de Win, and his vocalist wife, Arianne Knegt, started jangling the Tip Jar in 2013 as a vehicle for their original material, helped out by various talented pals. Their seventh album, ‘Road of no return’, recorded between Austin and Eindhoven, continues their Dutch Americana odyssey of tasty musicianship and solid songwriting. The couple share vocal chores: Arianne’s cut-glass vocals shine on touching ballads like ‘Be someone’ and ‘I’ll be here’ where wistful fiddle winds beautifully around Bart’s tasteful piano; her laid-back jazzy swing drags nicely against the frantic band soloing of ‘Night train’ and brings authority to the title track. Bart’s more wheezy pipes are an intriguing contrast, adding sardonic spice to the clipped Steely Dan groove of ‘Literal’ and humorous hoedown ‘Wish I were a cowboy’ but also bringing perfect pathos to the aching closer, ‘Corner of your heart’. “Dutch couple Bart de Win and Arianne Knegt are the central source that spins the magic dust through the songs of Tip Jar, with superb harmonies mixing with the bright melodies in creating songs about love and life. “This is the 7th Tip Jar studio album. Some songs were recorded in the Netherlands & others were captured faithfully in Austin, TX. You heard right. What a contrast. But listen to the music. It’s about as true Americana as one can get. The opener is so homegrown & rural you can taste the turnips & fallen green apples under the tree as the trout jump from the stream. That’s the warm feeling stirred up in the title track ‘Road of No Return’. The band magically conjures traditional savoring flavors that run through their veins, voices & fingers as they play. Performed diligently. The vocals trade off in a diversified well-balanced manner. The album has a gentle convincing depth somewhat similar to the late 70s-early 80s Canadian New Wave band Spoons with Sandy Horne & Gordon Deppe. It’s The Spoons’ approach & how they conveyed their originality that I’m comparing to Tip Jar. ‘All good’ is a rousing vocal piece like The Spoons — with an infectious optimistic melody. Bart de Win & Arianne Knegt primarily hold down the lead vocals warmly, colorfully, and fascinatingly. Arianne has an angelic voice in her solo spots and could stand beside the best (Christine Collister, Susan Osborne, Sandy Denny, Judith Durham & Emmylou Harris). ‘Standing on the corner’ with its highly energetic melodic workout sounds like the finest folk/country this side of Peter, Paul & Mary backed by Goose Creek Symphony. Now that’s a viable combination. Exhilarating stuff. I find the music well arranged & presented with equal measures of poignant ballads, soft vintage jazz & rollicking rootsy numbers. I played several more than once. There are multiple musical influences for sure but Tip Jar manages to shake it up enough to render the influences as a measure of reminiscence & not so much an obvious connection to anything. De invloeden van het trio komen uit Amerika, maar Tip Jar maakt geen pure americana. De Brabanders mengen typisch Amerikaanse stijlen als bluegrass, country en folk met een flinke dosis pop en een scheutje jazz. “De motivatie van Tip Jar is simpel, doeltreffend en vooral muzikaal: zeer unieke en aanstekelijke americana maken, vanuit een diepe liefde voor Amerikaanse rootsmuziek. De luisterliedjes en bijbehorende anekdotes krijg je er gratis bij als je Tip Jar live ziet; de moeite waard. Met de nieuwe plaat Road Of No Return heeft de Nederlandse formatie zeven langspelers en een live-album staan. Evenals de voorgangers vonden de opnamesessies voor dit album niet alleen plaats in de thuisbasis (Eindhoven), maar ook in Texas. En wel in de Jumping Dog Studios van de legendarische Ron Flynt in Austin. In die omgeving ga je vanzelf accentloos spelen en zingen, zeker met ondersteuning van ervaren Amerikanen als ‘Scrappy’ Jud Newcomb en Walt Wilkins, en met een wervelende ritmesectie. Het leidt tot twaalf fraaie liedjes, met afwisselende inhoud en tempo’s. De onomkeerbare weg wordt zowaar nog gezellig ook, als het duo monter het motto zingt: ‘Running together on a road of no return.’ Als duet is er eensgezindheid, de accordeon, banjo en vele andere instrumenten spelen er mooi doorheen, zeker in songs als ‘Standing On the Corner’. De langzamere liedjes zijn niet minder mooi, zoals het ook tekstueel diepgravende ‘Be Someone’ (een tedere breekbare ballade van Arianne Knegt) of de titelsong. Gulle harmonie en sprankelend gitaarwerk gaan samen in ‘All Good’. Ook het sobere ‘I’ll Be Here’ en ‘Cradle’ zijn mooi. ” - Herman Veenhof (February 28 2025)

“Harry Hendriks is een buitengewoon smaakvol gitarist. Met zijn gitaar, banjo en achtsnarige ukelele is hij inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een belangrijke hoeksteen van Tip Jar. Het zijn vooral de hartverwarmende ballads met persoonlijke teksten en een lichte bluesy ondertoon die ‘Road of no return’ hun grote kracht geven. “Op een druilerige avond in Haarlem veranderde de kleine zaal van het Patronaat in een warme, bijna kroegachtige setting voor een bijzonder luisterconcert. Met een podium vol instrumenten en een verwachtingsvolle sfeer begon de avond met een prachtige muzikale opwarmer van Tip Jar, gevolgd door een indrukwekkend optreden van de Britse countryzanger Ags Connolly. Tip Jar opende met persoonlijke en gevoelige nummers van hun nieuwe album. Het publiek kreeg een intieme set van zeven nummers voorgeschoteld, waarbij samenzang en muzikale veelzijdigheid de rode draad vormden. Bart wisselde moeiteloos tussen toetsen, gitaar en zelfs een korte passage op mondharmonica. Het openingsnummer 'Road of no return' zette direct de toon voor een aandachtig publiek. Elk nummer werd voorzien van een korte introductie, wat de verhalen achter de muziek tot leven bracht. Een licht moment ontstond toen Arianne tijdens het laatste nummer even haar tekst kwijt was. Na een geintje van Bart maakte ze het gevoelige lied prachtig af, wat een glimlach op de gezichten van de toehoorders toverde.
